Gary Carlson Following graduation from the Naval Academy in 1961, Gary completed 26 years of service which included 16 years with the Reserves here in San Diego. Moving to Gatewood Hills in Rancho Bernardo in 1971, he started his civil service career as a warfare analyst with the Research Laboratory on Point Loma. The highlight of this period was his assignment as Science Advisor to the Commander Third Fleet in 1985 for which he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. After joining the Country Club of RB in 2000, Gary was elected to a 3 year term on the Board of Directors in 2003. In this position he directed the Golf Committee and a Communications Committee through several innovations. However, his main community volunteer effort has been devoted to the Neighborhood Watch (NHW) program. Before retiring in the mid-90s he began to assume leadership in the community's Neighborhood Watch program, first as the District Coordinator for Swim & Tennis, and finally in 2006 relieving Jacquie Nelson as the Director of RB NHW. In this position he has led a major recruiting effort for a new generation of leaders and instituted several committees to emphasize citizen crime awareness, effective communications particularly in community emergencies, and general information seminars. As a result of this NHW involvement, he is now an active member of the RB Community Foundation and the Public Safety Council.
